Laois 1s versus Pembroke Wanderers 6ths
Laois ladies came out with a full squad to face Pembroke on Tuesday evening in Dublin for the first round of the division 5/6 Senior Ladies Leinster cup.
The game was high intensity from the start, requiring skill and determination from all the team to maintain possession of the ball. The first quarter remained scoreless; however Laois were beginning to show dominance.
The second quarter had many goal scoring opportunities. Laois continued to set the press quickly and maintained pressure on the opposition to keep Pembroke out of their defensive circle. Liz Poustie capitalised on any opportunity to prevent Pembroke from coming down the right and transferred the ball swiftly to free players in the centre of the pitch.
A quick, well-paced free taken by Claire Igoe and was received by Amy Moynan, who slipped the ball narrowly past Pembrokeβs skilful goalie to give Laois a 1-0 lead at half time.
The drive and determination among all the team continued throughout the match. Pembroke tried to even the score line after they were awarded a short corner in the third quarter but failed to get the ball through the experienced Laois defenders and goalie Marina Packer.
The last quarter, Laois continued to remain strong, ever trying to look for another goal opportunity. There was an ecstatic buzz from all the Laois players on the pitch and those who came to support as the final whistle blew with the final scoreline of 1-0 to Laois.
Laois 1s proceed to the next round of the cup in January and have an away league match in Dublin this weekend.
