Laois 2s were on the road on Saturday afternoon as they took on Railway Union 5s in what was a glorious day for hockey, with the sun shining and the Laois ladies ready for their second last game of the season.

From the first whistle, the Laois defence of Vicky, Kellie, Charlotte (Captain), and Emma were kept busy, with Daisy in goals making a number of excellent saves. The first quarter saw strong carries up the left-hand side, with great link-up play from the energetic trio of Molly, Zoe, and Poppy. Despite the intensity, the opening quarter ended scoreless.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with both sides enjoying spells of possession. Laois applied strong pressure on the opposition defence, led by Jenny, Mikayla, and Abbie attacking down the right. However, it was the home side who broke the deadlock with a powerful strike from the top of the circle. Midway through the quarter, Laois suffered a setback when captain Charlotte sustained an unfortunate injury, forcing a reshuffle in positions. Despite their efforts to regroup, Railway Union struck again to make it 2–0 going into halftime.

After the break, Laois came out with renewed energy and intent. They created several promising opportunities inside the circle but were unlucky not to convert. Abbie, Jessica, and Molly combined well, showing excellent passing and composure to keep the opposition under pressure. Young player Niamh also made a strong impact with determined runs down the right, supported well by Abbie through the centre. At the other end, Laois continued to defend resolutely, with Jenny, Vicky, Kellie, and Emma dealing with a series of short corners. Despite their efforts, the home side added a third goal late in the quarter.

The final quarter saw the welcome return of captain Charlotte to the backline, allowing Jenny to move back into centre forward, supported by Poppy and Mikayla on the wings. This helped Laois regain structure and momentum, with several strong passages of play building from defence through midfield. Their persistence paid off when Zoe delivered a precise pass to Jenny, who finished confidently past the goalkeeper to get Laois on the scoreboard. The goal lifted spirits, and Laois pushed forward in search of more, earning a short corner and creating further chances. Unfortunately, they were unable to add to their tally, while Railway Union secured a fourth goal to leave the final score at 4–1.

Laois showed great resilience throughout, particularly in response to the early injury to their captain. A special thank you to all the supporters who travelled on the day.

Laois 2s will play their final game of the season next Saturday, March 28th.
