Laois 2s faced their old rivals from division 11 Portrane, for the first time this season in what promised to be a match of fantastic hockey.
Both teams started guns blazing with attacks and counterattacks. Portrane had a few short corners and shots in the circle all which were blocked by the stellar defensive line lead by our goalie Caroline.
Laois attacked up the left with super balls being sent up by both Eleanor and Averil. Gloria and Julie made some nice link up play and won a short corner which Laois was unlucky not to score from. In the second quarter, left forward Evana was sent a ball from midfield and narrowly missed the inside of the far post.
The Portrane counter attack was strong but stopped in its tracks by our sweeper Jane. In the third quarter Julie was picking up super balls from midfield and attacking at goal, with one 1v1 on goal.
Both Claudia and Lily did a fantastic job in ensuring when Portrane did counter attack, that they didnβt cut through the centre. Unfortunately, Laois couldnβt keep Portrane out much longer and they score two goals. Despite this the Laois work rate never dropped and the teams short play and passing game drastically improved as the match progressed.
The match ended 2-0 to Portrane. However, despite the highly competitive match, our friendly rivals joined us for a cuppa and some lovely homebaked treats.
