Laois 2s made the short trip to Carlow HC on Saturday 11th of October. With both teams sitting near the top of the Division 10 table, the visiting side knew from the first whistle it was going to be a tough challenge. There was great defensive play in the experienced Laois back line of Jayne, Kellie, Averil and Charlotte which resulted in both sides remaining scoreless at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was also a very quick affair with great passes from the midfield players of Ciara, Jenny and Emma Hewison which resulted in forward player Abbie getting the first short corner of the game. The Laois side was unlucky not to score during the short but that did not dampen the efforts of the forward line of Suzi, Abbie and Sophie who had lovely link up play. The second quarter ended with no score for either side.

Following a motivating halftime talk from Captain Charlotte, Laois came out revitalised. A change in the midfield for the Laois side saw Emma Holohan stepping into right mid and Emma Hewison moved up to the right forward position. Goalkeeper Ruth was called into action several times and made a series of excellent saves, including a crucial one-on-one stop to keep Laois level heading into the final quarter.

The fourth and final quarter saw the visiting Laois side defending hard in the first opening minutes. This defending ended in a short corner being awarded to the home side Carlow. The Laois backs lined up for the short corner and successfully defended it. There were a number of clearances made by Vicky who was new to the left back position and she fitted in seamlessly. The Laois side was unlucky to be awarded a green card for Charlotte, in her absence seen midfield player Jenny stepping into the backline. There was great link up play from midfield players Ciara and Sophie which led to several chances on goal for forward players Suzi, Abbie and Zoe. Once the Laois captain was back in the final few minutes of the game seen an unfortunate short corner awarded to the home side. The Laois ladies lined up to defend but unfortunately the home side were successful and placed the first and only goal on the scoreboard.

Despite the narrow 1-0 defeat, Laois 2s showed outstanding teamwork, discipline, and determination throughout the game. The players left everything on the pitch and look forward to welcoming the Carlow side to their home venue in the coming weeks. The next game for the Laois 2s takes place next Saturday (18/10/25) in Loreto Kilkenny as they take on Trinity 4s team.
