Saturday 1st November saw Round 1 Cup division 9/10 kick off, and Laois ladies' 2s hosted division 9 Glenanne 3s who are unbeaten in their league matches so far this year. The weather was favourable, and the energy within the team was high. Still building on previous matches, the team started with a mixture of experienced players in key positions, and the youth of the team didn't shy from the job either.
A nervous 1st quarter meant that the team put themselves under a bit of pressure and despite some good clearances from the back line of Jenny, Kellie, Vicky, Averil and Charlotte and strong goal keeper Ruth; Glennane slipped passed a goal. Team talked about steading our play, and the 2nd quarter saw our mid field working well at the interception of the Glenanne attack and driving forward with more attacking play from Eleanor, Ciara, Suzie and Lily.
A short corner for Laois was well saved by the opposition goal keeper and allowed Glenanne to counter attack at speed. Following a sucession of defending short corners, a cross from Glenanne found the backboard to leave it 2-0 at half time. The team knew they had to press forward and the second half very much kept Glenanne having to work hard and several quick free taking allowed Louise, Molly, Sophie and Emma Hewison to create some good passages of play. Emma Holohan was unlucky not to get a ball pass the goal keeper in the last quarter.
The whole team never gave up, and the work rate was there to be seen. The final whistle blew 2-0 but lots of positives to take from the game. Huge thanks to Coach Paul and to all the supporters who travelled down. It's great to have ye on the sidelines.
Best of luck to Glenanne in the next round of the cup.
